Forbes, James David: Travels through the Alps of Savoy. V1. 10 Dec. 2010

James David Forbes was a Scottish scientist, born in Edinburgh, April 20, 1809, and died at Clifton, England, Dec. 31, 1868.

His best known publication 'Travels through the Alps of Savoy and other parts of the Pennine Chain, with Observations on the Phenomena of Glaciers' (1843) was the result of his 1842 travels though the Pennine Chain and his detailed studies of the glacier 'Mer de Glace' located in the glacier field of Mont Blanc near Chamonix, France. The book was considered at the time of its publication to be the most charming, as well as most scientifically important of all books of Alpine travel.

Although there are two chapters on the Mer de Glace that probably will appeal only to specialists in glaciers, the rest of the book is chiefly about Forbes' extraordinary walking/climbing tour through the Pennine Alps (of France, Switzerland, and Italy that includes Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, and Monte Rosa) in which he visited many villages and other localities long before other English-speaking travelers.
