An advantage of high production per day, and 747 shipping, is that they can probably ramp down production fairly fast. If they don't sell them all for the holidays, they can sell easily them next year. However, I think they probably will sell most (and perhaps all) of them.
This is the first year that the US ebook reading device market is in full flow at Christmas, and it did ok in other years despite shortages. Half a million high-end reading devices in the Christmas season isn't a stretch at all. There are many lower price alternatives, but the price isn't that high and it does deliver color. Color might not be a big deal for most reading, but it is certainly a great point of sale feature.
