Do READERS have to be removed from carry-on luggage like laptop computers or are they treated more like cell phones and camera and mp3 players and can they remain inside the luggage during scanning?

Hello from newbie. The reason my EB600 died I guess it is that it went through the airport scanner. I had it in my bag. It passed ok, and when 10 min later I turned it on the screen went all stripes. I had it replaced, was flying with the new one, this time in the luggage, tucked in AND wrapped in aluminum foil - and it also died on arrival. Now I really don't know - are they that fragile, am I just not lucky or what the heck? The way there nothing happened, it was in an almost empty luggage and it arrived safely. Only on return, neatly packed and secured - dead. Sniff. Any ideas?
