I leave my cover on all of the time. The Kindle just seems safer that way, having dropped a book or two while I have been reading them.
The extra weight doesn't bother me and I like the feel of the leather. A lot of people prefer to read the Kindle while it is naked, as you seem to. If the looseness of the back panel annoys you (sorry you have this problem - perhaps you should contact Amazion CS for replacement as this is a defect) there are minimalist covers you could get, such as this one (it comes in different colours):
