* For home stereo, WiFi media players seem fairly expensive and require a music server to be running on a PC.
Do you know the Airport Express? It allows you to stream MP3s to a stereo either by stereo jacks or by digital toslink cable. All you need is to have iTunes installed on your PC/MAC.

* For home PDA WiFi access, you still need a music server, I think.
In my case, I can use the built-in Wifi of the Axim x50v to directly access the drives of my PC. This way I can browse to the directories containing MP3s and directly play them on the PDA using a PDA MP3 client, without music server.

* For remote internet access to your music, do you need to do the whole "remote control of your pc" thing, or is there an easier (and secure) way to do it?
Good question. What OS are you running? I am not 100% sure how you contral your music remotely via Internet and yet keep safe from hackers and virii.
