It's good that you have found a reader that works for you.
Like the others I don't understand why you just didn't use either ADE or Calibre instead of messing with the Kobo Desktop if you didn't like it.
For any newbies out there if you don't like the Desktop app then just don't use it - you don't have to if you don't want to.
