My Kindle is the same way.. I use a free utility that is amazing for conversion from pdf to epub. http://www.pdftoepub.com/
It formats for a 7" kindle or epub reader and turns the pdfs to nice epubs.

I've had my NC for only a day and I'm truly LOVING it... Will write more later.
