If you do want to be able to read free eBook via your local library, a Kindle is not a good fit. You will need a device such as a Sony 650 or 950, nook, nook color, Kobo or Kobo wifi an Apple iPad/iPod Touch/iPhone running Bluefire Reader app, and others. But what these all have in common is ADE which handles ePub and the time limiting DRM used by Overdrive.
