Yes, no renewals through Overdrive, even if it's not on hold. You can return it and immediately check it out again if no one has requested it. Unlike paper books at my library, where you can request the book even while you still have it out, you can't do that on Overdrive either. If you try to request, it will inform you that you already have it out. On my Overdrive system, I can check out books for 7, 14, or 21 days (21 is the default) and for paper books, 21 days is the norm (unless it's a "hot pick" in which case it's just one week).
As far as the OP- I was a little tempted to get a K3 or the nook at one point, but I am really happy with my sony, and now I'd love to have a 650. I know many people with nooks and many with kindles, and they are all happy with their choices. I think it really depends on where you plan to get your books and how tech-savvy you are if you'd like more options with getting books.
