The screen background is the same. The difference is the colour of the "ink". On a 2nd generation screen "black" text is grey; on a 3rd generation screen it is truly black. The screen manufacturer quotes a 50% improvement in contrast between the two screens - that does seem to be pretty accurate.

You can see the two screens side by side in a photograph in this post. I think you'll agree that the difference is pretty striking.
