If you are out of the 3G coverage but still have AT&T (or whatever is the provider) signal (2G coverage) the Kindle 3G modem will fallback to the EDGE/GPRS with slower speed. In fact my 3G Kindle is on 2G half of the time. I think the 3G version of Kindle is a good choice.
