The reason they want it turned off is because (if I remember my High School science correctly) all electronic devices emit RF, the question is what level, and will it interfere with the instruments during a very critical phase of flight. Takeoff and landing. Aircraft manufacturers perform testing of some devices, but not all. So "approved" devices are allowed.
I know the Reader is off when not refreshing the display, but rather than get in a "discussion" with the flight attendant, I just turn it off and lose a combined 10 minutes of reading time. Not that big a deal, really.
