It depends... I usually turn pdf books (all text, with italics/bolds/etc., and maybe a couple of images) into html (or Word docs), format/reflow into smaller pages and turn into pdf again. But some A4/letter pdfs are too hard to reformat any smaller (comics, text books), and then you either zoom in/crop out the margins of the original, or turn to landscape; in which case, the iLiad will take a "next page" flip to go to the bottom of the page, and then to the next page. Very doable.
I agree with you that the image quality (as far as I've seen from screenshots of other eink machines) is very noticeable.
