FWIW, I was going through the same thing you are. I don't have an eReader yet, am hoping for one for Christmas. But I asked for a Kindle for mostly the same reasons speedlever stated. I like the physical keyboard of the Kindle. I went to the store and looked at both and just liked the Kindle better. I also watched a video on youtube that compared the 2 and the Kindle seemed easier to navigate. Went to a B&N store and the demo girl had a hard time trying to bring up the dictionary in the Nook. I did like that the Nook was able to read Library books, but I am a very slow reader and our library has a 14 day limit, definitely not enough time for me.
