When it came time for the inevitable book report at the end of the semester, I wrote an honest editorial on the first chapter. I think my teacher stopped reading my report after I stated that "I can only assume that it was not Margaret Laurence, but Lucifer himself who penned this mind-numbing drivel solely in the hopes of driving me insane". (I remember that verbatim after 15 years!) Good thing that the (unrelated to the book study) Diploma level English 30 essay counted for 85 percent of my final grade!
I had "Fifth Business", which I have read many, many times since. It was the best book I've ever been assigned in school. I think we read "A Handmaid's Tale" and "1984", as well. I was always lucky with reading assignments in school. I don't recall ever having to read anything that I outright didn't like.
