Calibre & Kindle Annnotations

I'm trying to figure out what I can use the Kindle annotations for in Calibre.

I have Kindle books that have bookmarks and Location saved, in the comments field under annotations.

When I remove that book and then place a copy back on the Kindle, it starts out completely fresh. There are no bookmarks and the book starts on the very first page (not at the old saved Location). I believe the bookmarks may still be in My Clippings, but I don't get the little folded-down corner marking when a (previously) bookmarked location is on the screen.

I had thought that by saving the bookmarks and location, they would be send out with the book the next time I placed it on the Kindle. That seems to be wrong.

So, what are they saved for? What can I "do" with this information?
