Windows, OS X and Linux are the only systems supported for device detections. Device detection is going to be different on every platform and platform specific support is necessary.

Your donation is certainly appreciated however FreeBSD support is not a high impact priority. I would highly recommend you open a
ticket because feature requests tend to get lost on the forums.

GPLv3 was chosen by Kovid. He is comfortable with the license and felt it was best for calibre. There have been a number of contributors who have contributed under this license. The choice of license is a moot point and it won't be changing.
I'm assuming that you are brining this up because it will prevent you from developing the necessary code to support FreeBSD. That is your choice but do be aware that it could be a considerable amount of time before this enhancement is fulfilled.
