You will get it free on your Kindle, if your Kindle is connected via Wifi. That is the important part. The part where Amazon charges is if you are using 3G.
So, if you send a file to your free.kindle.com address, you won't get it via 3G, but as soon as you are in Wifi, you will. If you send it to just the Kindle address (non-free one), and you are only connected via 3G, you will get charged.. or you can setup a limit to how much a (non-free) email can cost, such as 0.00, and you end up with everything going through the free account.
