I just started reading the 3rd book in the Jack Reacher series (macho guy thriller mystery type, if you haven't been following the Reacher thread). Anyway, in this book, Reacher has spent 3 months getting paid for what most guys would spend big money at the gym to do. He's been digging in-ground pools. By hand shovel (the yards are too small for a big digger). So he's in the best shape of his life!
Although, he was in Key West, wayyyy south Florida, so it wasn't frozen ground, like you are dealing with. But you reminded me of him....
