I think it must depend on where you live. Our Best Buy stores have staff that know the store layout (even if they aren't supremely knowledgeable of the products they are selling), a good product selection, and great customer service.

Fry's is great on selection, but it is often more difficult to track down an employee (probably due to the larger floor space).

And my favorite part: Fry's and Best Buy both have a unified queueing system so that you never get stuck in the slowest line! (Thoughts of Eddie Russett, Jasper Fforde's protagonist in Shades of Grey, come to mind here...)

Unfortunately, they are merely responding to changes in the market, as you point out. If people won't buy, then the stores are going to be hard-pressed to sell.
