I've had a Kindle 2 since Nov 21 2010 -- call it a year. I've also acquired a Kobo (May 1) and a Kindle 3 (Aug 30), and a couple of accessories (covers for the Kindles).

I've mainly shopped at Kobo, Fictionwise and Amazon, but a few purchases were made elsewhere such as the Sony store. In Canada, the Sony store is pretty lame and, since May, Fictionwise as well -- pretty lame. But it surprises me how few purchases have been at Amazon -- $100 vs. $200+ at both Kobo and Fictionwise. But that is attributed to the ongoing Kobo discounts and the former Fictionwise micropay plan, now expired.

In year one, the hobby has cost:
• $685 on devices + $80 on accessories
$580 on ebooks for 146 titles
• $25 on ebooks for 100 titles of 2 classic mystery writers that probably are subject to copyright

So ... even though some of the ebooks have cost as much as $20 (!), and several have flirted with $10, the freebies (of commercial, not PD, works) and lower cost items bring the average cost down to abt $4 each. And that includes all taxes, etc.

Looked at another way -- I've spent $585 on Kindles and accessories but only $100 on ebooks -- 19 paid and 26 free, but just $170 on the Kobo (I love Canadian taxes ... not) and $235 on ebooks -- 42 paid and 4 free but most of those paid acquired some sort of discount.
