Yes, the original screen saver images are backed up in a folder on the Kindle. You can label your screen savers, but you'll need an image editor to do so. No, you wouldn't need the font hack for that. Getting the best results basically requires you to create images of the proper size (600x800 for Kindle 1/2/3 or 824x1200 for Kindle DX), converting the image to gray scale, then reducing the image to 16 shades of gray, possibly using dithering if there are gradient areas in the image. Then saving the image with the least amount of compression to avoid artifacting. This can be accomplished by using the PNG format which is lossless, I believe, but will result in generally larger image file sizes.
