PMLZ is just a zip archive with the PML and associated image files in it. Calibre does not support books with multiple files. Each book must be one single file. This is why HTML is stored in a zip file when adding to calibre. PMLZ is just used as the extension to make it easier to know what kind of format is within the archive.
