nook reads ePub format
Kindle reads azw (same as mobi or prc) or sometimes Topaz format. I point this out because most Amazon kindle books are azw files, but some of those more "rare" not widely available books are Topaz. Usually badly scanned, horribly formatted, not proof read Topaz.
to read the file on your nook you need to buy the book, take off the DRM and convert it - then transfer it to the nook
Very easy if you have an azw file. More difficult with Topaz but still usually doable.
