Jon - how about we work on epub conformance testing down in the epub forum? I don't think the IDPF will ever get around to it, since Apple and Adobe don't bother to conform.
The thing is, if I was looking for a reader to buy and I went to Borders, I would not be buying a Kobo because I would see that embedded fonts do not work. I would not now (until now) the reason why. The fixing of this bug is pretty serious as it does effect a lot of publisher eBooks.

I just took a look at two publisher eBooks and the place they used to turn on the font family is in the body in the CSS.

This isn't so much a conformance issue as it is a bug. ADE works fine with the font-family in body. So since ADE works, it's what Kobo did with ADE in their version that's at fault.
