No dodging is necessary. Baen's model works for Baen. It will not work for most other publishers, especially the big ones.

Kris knows whereof she speaks: she has been a publisher (she and her husband Dean Wesley Smith published an innovative hardcover fiction magazine called Pulphouse back in the late 80's/early 90's), and editor (she was editor of the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction for a few years, before Mercury Press sold it to Gordon Van Gelder), and is a current full time freelance writer.
