You sound a lot like me in some respects, and I'm for sony all the way. It reads library books, plenty of free books out there to read (as well as inexpensive books). I don't need 3G or wifi. I've got my eye on a new Sony 650, but, for now, I love love love my 505.
Any reason you're only thinking of Kindle? I think one of its highest selling points is that you can easily download from Amazon, but it doesn't sound like that's what you're looking for (although there are free books on Amazon as well, from time to time)
