The slots are intended to accommodate the Amazon case (and some 3rd party cases with Amazon's permission, I gather) - two prongs slide into those slots and anchor the kindle in the case. The Amazon lighted case actually gets power from inside those slots. I don't think using them would be easy or safe. Although, snapping open the case might show something inside to wrap a lanyard cord around.

One suggestion which would create a minor deface of your kindle would be to locate a place on the kindle where you could drill a very fine, small hole and run a lanyard cord through it. There are pictures and videos of dissembled kindles so you might be able to find a location that does not impinge on any electronics.

Looking at it, I'd say if you do not use headphones and so far the microphone serves no purchase, you might be able to loop strong monofilament fishing line between the headphone jack and the microphone port and then loop a lanyard through that (I did something similar with my Tomtom920 gps unit).

I am somewhat surprised when certain small, handheld items to not have lanyard attachment points. I created on for my Blackberry 8830 and as I noted, for my tomtom gps.
