I also wanted an e-reader mostly to be able to read free books at home. So I recently purchased a Jetbook Lite, and I couldn't be more pleased with it. It's inexpensive (currently $90 at Newegg) and basic; it reads a variety of formats, so in addition to all the readily available public domain books, I can easily borrow library books, and I can get books from BN, Borders, Kobo, Sony, etc.
