Today began so nicely. About 8 degrees centigrade, bright sun and blue skies. Being Saturday we decided to take a ride through the mountains to catch the last of the fall foliage colors, riding through the tea plantations in Uji, just south east of Kyoto.
It was spectacular... more color that I would have thought still on the tress. We stopped to gather some tea berries to plant on the veranda (our little tea bush is lonely...) and while we were standing there, a troop of monkeys came out of the forest into the clearing about 20 meters away from us, sitting down to catch the bright sun's warmth. We watched them for about ten minutes, the babies playing and wrestling together, the older folks peacefully grooming each other. Just relaxing in the sun.
Just as I was about to move to take out my camera, a mini-van with 5 kids and two adults pulled up and all piled out to watch. Instantly the kids grabbed pebbles and started to hurl them into the monkey troop! The parents said nothing. .5 seconds of six kids chucking stones was all the monkeys would put up with and they disappeared back into the forest. The parents never said a word.
I walked over to them, smiled and said; "The monkeys have better manners than your children," smiled again, and walked back to my wife, we got on the bike and rode off. Sometimes I really don't like people!

I don't like that attitude as well. We were once in the Arizona-Sonara Desert Museum and saw some kids just destroy these rare plants and tramp on insects. Their parents were with them. It almost physically hurt me. When something like that happens, I tried to ' think peace' , but it is difficult.
