Getting rooted 2.5.1 to work with shelves, registration question.

It looks as though the new 1.5 update needs to be registered in order to keep the shelves in the library. My question is, do I need to register first in order to get the shelves to work with 2.5.1 or can I update the rooted software first and then register later. And do I need to continuously be wirelessly connected to keep the shelves. Question concerns a WiFi model where I rarely find any hotspot.

Thanks
