I've been carrying around a Kindle DX when I travel for a while now -- it has even gone up Mt. Kilimanjaro

Not a mark on it.
It's in the standard Amazon cover and I place it next to my Mac Book Pro in a smallish backpack, (next to a K2). It's really never been an issue, not any more than the K2.
12" would fit just as easily, particularly if it had an on-screen keyboard.
I am really surprised nobody has brought out a larger screen device. 9.7" is really too small for magazines and PDfs.
