Mint is basically ubuntu in different clothes so it should work.
If it is the version of Calibre from the mint repositories it may pre-date the addition of the new Sony device drivers. Maybe try installing the latest version?
Also, if you have another device plugged in at the same time (iphone, ipod etc) this can also stop Calibre detecting the new device.
