It takes a bit of getting used to, but I quickly learned how to position my finger, to avoid selecting the wrong word. Getting the timing of the double-tap right is important, too. So, I find I don't need to use the stylus on my 650.

I can enlarge dictionary text without any difficulty, when reading ePub books. Perhaps it's something to do with the format that you're using.
