That's exactly the point, in my case. I don't just expect to be able to read them on my Sony. I want to be able to read them on whatever other device(s) I end up using, years into future. Hardware, software, formats, media, et cetera, all come and go, like fashions. Why should ebooks that I buy be limited to a transient device, or format? Paper books that I have bought have lasted decades, will almost certainly outlive me and be passed on for others to read. Why should ebooks be any different? Here, I'm not talking about buying a book and then making copies of it for illicit use, but rather the idea of buying a book for my sole use, then being able to give it to someone else when I've finished with it.
