Now that I have updated to 4.2 (4.2.1 rather), I have to say that I'm not too bothered with the new setup. Since I've acclimated to it going into the gadget menu to toggle this doesn't take that much longer.

Interestingly Apple's own apps seem to completely ignore the new "mute" switch.
