There are several other Windows readers for DRM-free AZW (MOBI) files. The Windows MobiPocket Reader is still good even though now moribund. FBReader works well with MOBI's, as does uBook.

Most Kindle ebooks have DRM (and some are TOPAZ which is harder to deal with). It is easy to strip AZW DRM using a stand-alone tool or a Calibre plug-in. If you go the Calibre route, Nook Study and Sony Reader Library are good Windows apps for ePubs (which Calibre can create from DRM-free MOBI). In the US the law isn't entirely clear but it is probably ok to strip DRM for your own use from ebooks you bought (e.g. to use an app without frizzy fonts). See Apprentice Alf's Blog and tools_v2.2a for more info on DRM.
