If you look at it at an angle, it would in fact appear that a sensor is present (or, at least, that one was supposed to be present). I think that we'll have to wait for a software update to see it used, however.

In the meantime, tapping the lower right corner allows easy access to the brightness adjustment when you are outside of an ePub book and want to make an adjustment.
