As others have said, the Kindle is no more locked into a bookstore then any other e-reader out there.

I would suggest going to Best Buy and comparing the Nook, Sony, and Kindle. That will give you a good idea about what you are looking for physically in an e-reader. Then check out the three book stores. Keep in mind that all three e-readers have additional book stores that you can buy books from.

Also keep in mind that conversion is easy.
