The Kindle is not anymore restricted than any other device you might buy... and it sounds exactly like the reader you need...

You can buy (or get for free) DRM free books everywhere, and using Calibre you can convert them to be read on the kindle...

My Kindle is still my main reader and - I reckon - the best.
