I got one when they were basically the only game in town (in Australia). I wasn't put off by the speed too much as I knew I was buying into a simple bare bones reader. And as an entry level reader it was indeed pretty good and I read a lot of books on it.
What eventually got me down were the terrible software and lack of really basic functionality like a goto page function or bookmarking. More importantly some truly atrocious power saving "features" were added with the only firmware upgrade, which put the device to sleep after 15 min inactivity (fine by me), but which then turned the device completely off after a further 15 min (what the?!?!). Which is bad enough but when coupled with 45 sec + boot time (slower than most computers) means that reading becomes a thing you have to plan, instead of just sitting down for a couple of minutes for a quick read.
Now I expected the 650 to be better since it cost me $300 compared to the $200 Kobo, but I didn't expect it to be so much better in every way. I truly am so impressed with it.
The Kobo is now my wife's!
