The Kindle only reads PDFs and MOBI and plain text. If you have another format (and even some PDFs), Calibre can convert it to MOBI for the Kindle. If you bought a DRMed ebook from a bookstore, there are 3rd party plug-ins for Calibre that will strip most DRM so that the ebook can be shifted to another format. See Apprentice Alf's Blog for more info on DRM (look for the tools_v2.2a bundle).
