It should not "release" that way. It sounds defective.
If you look at photos of the system, the bottom hook curves downward (like a comma ",") and the k3 needs to be hooked in at an angle and then rotated right-to-left upward toward the spring hook.
Mine does not move at all at the lower hook. There's a fraction of play at the top hook.
