As of about two restarts ago (I've stopped even using the software since it no longer, ever, recognizes the reader, restart/install or no) I haven't been dealing in collections Could those have been part of the initial problem?
Colections are like a group of links (or shorcuts) to books. For example, I have several books by Isaac Asimov and created a colletion with his name.

When your start Sony software (eBook Library) and Reader is connected, you have two items marked with a little arrow on the left side: "Library" and "Sony's Reader". If you click Reader and then click the button "Add" (left inferior corner), you can add a new collection. Then you can put books inside the collection. Next time you can connect Reader to PC without any problem.

I think there is some kind of problem when you install/uninstall libprs500. Before I got my Reader, I installed BookDesigner and Libprs500, but uninstalled the last one because didn't work (always showed a messagebox saying there was other application using database). Maybe if neccesary to delete some entries on windows' register.

By the way, I had to delete all the content on the Reader. If you have a backup of all your books on PC, I reccomend trying this:

Reader's main menu > Settings > Advanced Settings > Format internal memory

Remember: you will loss all of preloaded books.
