The Downloads column on your dashboard shows sample downloads as well as paid downloads. If you click on the hyperlinked number in that column, the page shows you three graphs: visits to the page, downloads from paid customers and sample downloads.

P.S. It's good when people download the free sample -- if they like it, they will return and buy! My total downloads is about 4x the number of sales, but that number also includes the people who paid for it and then downloaded it in its various available formats (epub, pdf, mobi).
