I grew up in central FL, and swam in ponds all childhood long -- pools were for rich people who could afford cable and caller ID. It was assumed that a natural body of water larger than a puddle had a gator in it.

They are, however, notorious cowards. If you're making a ruckus in a clear stretch of shoreline, they'd keep to themselves on the other side of the lake. I have, however seen them leap out of the water as far as that cat was and snatch a small animal (ducks) from shore, but there weren't any larger animals (people) nearby and the gator was hiding in the weeds.

The people in this video I'd classify as "stupid tourists". Either don't hang around them, or run them off. They're begging for trouble by teaching the gators they have nothing to fear from humans -- the cat, however, seems to know better!
no, being in the southeast was an anomaly for me. I grew up in Colorado/New Mexico and have only been in the northwest for about 12 years. I will never voluntarily go to the southeast for longer than 4 or 5 days again
