That is true but a lot of people (myself included) like the convenience of being able to buy a book right there on the device.

Last I checked, you couldn't use the webbrowser on an unregistered Kindle. It might be possible to do it on a jailbroken K3 and before the K3 came out, there were a ton of hacks to allow people outside the US (without cell access to Whispernet) to register their devices with Amazon but to be honest, I never checked. The PDF viewer (well, there's no separate PDF viewer - it's integrated into the main reader application) should work without registration.
