Certain aspects of the book are certainly depressing, but the story dynamic and Styron's language move the novel forward. I especially enjoy the interaction of the characters and Styron's ability at characterization, which goes very deep.
The novel is dense with language, yes - in a way that I enjoy. Styron exposes his characters and shows you their hypocrisies, horrors, failings. The human heart is on display.
I would recommend that one check out the customer reviews of this book to see if it's something that you would like to read; or, perhaps try Styron's first novel, "
Lie Down in Darkness," which has been described as very Faulkneresque.
