Wow! I can't even imagine what was embedded in the AK file that fubared your Kindle beyond being saved by a factory reset! Are you sure you did the factory reset?
If you still have the Kindle you might want to visit the Kindle Developers Forum and see if someone there has a copy of the firmware you could download and transfer via USB - or see if any of those techie-types can help you. Those guys have really dug into the guts of the Kindle.
