Many thanks to all who have been such a help to me.

I spent the afternoon in 'Safe Mode' on the computer.
Deleted old cleaners, downloded and updated new ones. Ran them (all five of them), took my dog for her walk, came back and switched on (with bated breath) and my computer is running perfectly.

Thanks to all at MR who helped me so generously.
